If the smoke is coming from where the exhaust pipe connects to the head...then I would suspect a faulty exhaust gasket or improperly torqued exhaust bolts (51-63 ft.lbs.).
The spark plug change should make no difference. While it is possible that oil leaked past the rings and into the combustion chamber during storage, it would produce blue or black smoke for a short time.
On another note: You should add fuel stabilizer to the petrol before putting it away for storage. Also drain the fuel from the float bowl. Frankly, for $1.50 a gallon I'd just dump the old gas and put in new.
